In 1949 Henry S. Levy & Sons, Inc., a family-owned kosher bakery in Brooklyn took on the services of Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB), an agency destined to forge a creative revolution in advertising during the next two decades. Thanks to the print ads DDB created for the Levy's bakery, all of NY and the advertising world would know the "You don't have to be Jewish to love Levy's Rye Bread" slogan. Even though the bakery eventually went out of business, their ads had an enormous influence on other ad agencies' work and pop culture in general-like the use of contrasting ethnicities in the United Colors of Benetton ads that ran during the 1980s, one of these showed a Hasidic boy with his arm around an Arab friend. I definitely have a soft spot for these ads, and appreciate the DDB legacy.

I Heart Cereal.

I actually grew up on/prefer some homemade granola/muesli over sugary commercial cereal... but I DO appreciate the classic commercial breakfast cereals like corn flakes and Shreddies... these vintage boxes are iconic. Props to graphic designer Alan Vale for these collages (except last one).

Boxed Water Is Better.

Part sustainable water company, part art project, part philanthropic project... Boxed Water Is Better started with the simple idea of creating a new bottled water brand that is kinder to the environment and gives back a bit... they found that it shouldn't be bottled at all, but instead, boxed. About 85% of the Boxed Water container is made from a renewable resource, trees (as oppose to plastic), that is a more sustainable material choice when harvested in a responsible way (and then recycled at its end of life stage). They ship the boxes flat to their filler which is significantly more efficient compared to shipping empty plastic or glass bottles to be filled... the flat, empty boxes we can fit roughly 5% of a truckload, would require about 5 truckloads for empty plastic/glass bottles. This efficiency comes in to play again when broken down to be recycled. The company also gives 20% of profits back to the supporting water and forestation organizations.

Refreshing.

Fish-Shaped Soy Sauce Bottles.

I hate to admit it, but I love the lil plastic disposable fish shaped soysauce bottles they serve with sushi here in Australia! not a sustainable design in the least... but damn fun and cute.
