Walkover PAP MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC Major-General Chan Chun Sing has been appointed the Acting Minister of Community Development, Youth and Sports despite earlier assertions by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong that ministers must have the mandate of the people to carry out their duties.
The fast-track promotion of MG Chan took many Singaporeans by surprise who thought the other PAP MP from the army Tan Chuan Jin would be made a minister instead.
MG Chan was dubbed the ‘kee chiu’ (hokkien for ‘raise hand’) MP after an infamous speech made at a PAP election rally in which he called on the audience to ‘kee chiu.
With the retiring of PAP strongman Lee Kuan Yew as Minister Mentor, MG Chan will probably be given the task of helming Tanjong Pagar GRC in the next general election.
Besides MG Chan, another newbie PAP candidate Heng Swee Kiat was appointed as Education Minister. Mr Heng contested in Tampines GRC where the PAP team garnered 57.2 percent of the valid votes.
