Gemma Ward

Doll-like beauty, Gemma Ward, is definitely up there with the "It Models" of the decade. She was my favourite model when I was in high school. I had fashion editorial shots of her plastered all over my books and by my desk. She become a popular international model around the same time I became fascinated with fashion editorials. I always thought of her of an alien-like beauty, in a good way of course. Although she has a very unusual look about her, there is something very approachable about her.

Gemma appeared as a guest editor of December 2005 issue of Vogue Australia. To this date it is one of my favourite issues of the magazine. I still have my copy, with lots of missing pages, and cut-out bits.

In 2007 I saw her on Gould St in Bondi Beach while I was checking out the boutiques. She looked fantastic! She was dressed very casual, in a sun dress and sandals, walking along the footpath. She skin was glowing in the sun and I couldn't get over how tall she was. She was even more stunning in real life, without the wonders of magazine air-brushing.

She starred in the 2008 film "The Black Balloon" alongside Toni Colette, which I watched a couple of years ago. I was really surprised by her acting ability. Definitely worth the watch.

Although, Gemma announced retirement in 2007 after Heath Ledges death and complaints of her weight gain, it is rumoured that she will be returning to the modelling world in 2010. I guess we'll have to wait and see if she makes a comeback.

Here are some of my favourite shots of Gemma Ward:

Weekend Away

Gemma Ward at Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay, Australia
Vogue UK July 2006

Last weekend I went away with some friends for  my 21+1 Birthday (not keen on turning 22 yet!) We stayed at my family's holiday house in Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay, which is a couple hours of south of Sydney. Unfortunately, I have no photos to document the amazing time we had because I left the memory card at home and there was no where to buy another there. It was a lovely couple of days - we stopped in the gorgeous country town of Berry for brunch along the way, made sangria, walked on the beach and even saw a couple of dolphins off the shore. The weather was glorious, especially for winter. We are planning another girls weekend once the weather warms up. This time I will be sure to have the camera, complete with the memory card, ready to go.

Gemma Ward on Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay

Vogue UK July 2006

These are a few images from a fashion shoot featuring Gemma Ward at Hyams Beach where I have been going to for holidays with my family for about 10 years now. I came across the shoot one day flicking through Bristish Vogue in a newsagency and recognised the beach straight away. Hyams Beach is certainitly one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with its crystal clear and turquoise waters. It is in the Guinness Book of Records for the whitest sand in the world. The sand is so white and fine that the light reflects of it - bring sunglasses! Some of my best childhood memories have taken place at Hyams Beach - building sand castles with my two brothers and sister, looking for crabs in the rock pools, going for long walks along the shore to the Naval base and swimming all day long.
