Are the NBA Playoffs Still Happening?

The NBA playoffs need a major face lift.  I remember two weeks ago when the entire sporting community was pumped up for the amazing ride ahead.  Fast forward to the present and the first round dragged on so long that the playoffs have seemed to take a backseat to the NFL draft/labor dispute and (I hate to say it) the NHL.  Commissioner Stern needs to give his playoffs a shot of 5 hour energy.  Before I lay out what I think needs to change about the NBA playoffs I'll be very clear; none of these changes will ever be implemented for the simple fact that they would most likely reduce television revenues.

In my opinion there are two big changes the NBA needs to adopt to keep the league in the forefront of the sporting community's collective minds.

1) Bring the first round back to 5 games.

Moving back to best of 5 series in the first round will keep the playoffs from becoming stagnant.  In the first round this year none of the outcomes would have been different if the series were played in just 5 games.  What is the value in playing a best of 7 series outside of increased TV revenue?

When the playoffs first started no one was talking about Miami vs Philly or the Lakers vs the Hornets.  Outside of Boston - NY the entire basketball community was already looking forward to the potential drama filled conference semi finals.  Why drag out the first round and risk losing the excitement of your fan base?

2) Cut out the off days

The biggest issue I have the with NBA playoffs is that they take soooo damn long.  Basketball was in the air two weeks ago and the league fails to capitalize on that excitement.  These teams play back to back games consistently throughout the season, why can't they do that in the playoffs?  The NBA needs to move back to the time where the only off days were travel days.  There's no reason that these teams need a day off between every single game in the playoffs.

I want to see the NBA regain its glory and popularity.  These changes need to be made to keep fans excited and into the playoffs.

NBA Semifinals Predictions

The NBA Playoffs have been terrific so far.  Every series had one or two nail biters, we have a Cinderella team, and a couple great series to look forward to in the upcoming weeks. I myself misfired on the Portland-Dallas series, Orlando-Atlanta series, and of course, Memphis-San Antonio. I thought the Grizzles would give them a series, but I didn't expect them to win the series.

Eastern Conference
1.) Chicago versus 5.) Atlanta- I am personally surprised to see the Hawks playing in the second round, and hopefully, they will give a better effort this season compared to past years.  Not having Kirk Heinrich will definitely hurt them because the guy has been a catalyst on offense, but he is just another body to guard Derrick Rose on defense. I think the Hawks' big men could make a difference, but Rose will once again be too good to stop on a nightly basis.  Chicago in six.

2.) Miami versus 3.) Boston- Some please explain to me how Boston can look completely dead in the last two months of the NBA season, and now look like an entirely different team?  I feel like Ashton Kutcher should come out of hiding and tell me I have been Punk'd.  So many interesting story lines in this series, whether it's LeBron vs. Boston, Chris Bosh v. Kevin Garnett, old crown vs. new royalty. Remember how Michael Jordan took down Detroit finally after two unsuccessful tries?  That's what LeBron needs to do with Boston to take that next step, or this season is a complete failure plus we have to reevaluate LeBron's ceiling in the NBA. I expect a knock down drag out fight in each game with LeBron finally coming up big in a clutch moment.  Miami in seven

Western Conference
4.) Oklahoma City versus 8.) Memphis - The Grizzlies and Thunder find themselves in a new position, the second round. Zach Randolph will have to find ways to score against the twin towers of Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka.  I think this has to be Russell Westbrook series for the Thunder to win. In my opinion, Kevin Durant will not have much success against Tony Allen who is a top notch defender, and Westbrook will be forced to put this team on his back for at least a couple games.  This will be a very competitive, exciting series.  Oklahoma City in six

2.) Los Angeles versus 3.) Dallas- The Lakers seemed to find their swagger in games five and six  against New Orleans, and Dallas did the same thing against Portland. It's unreal we haven't seen a Kobe Bryant vs. Dirk Nowitzki series, and I can guarantee we will have one game where both of the guys will just go absolutely bananas trading buckets with each other.  I will also tell you Pau Gasol is going to have a hell of a time with Tyson Chandler, same goes for Andrew Bynum.  Shawn Marion will need to find his old defensive self because the Mavs might be some trouble with who is guarding Kobe.  Even though Boston-Miami has a chance to be great, I think this will be the best series of them all. Los Angeles in seven.

First game starts at noon tomorrow, should be special.

Zack Greinke Dominance For Milwaukee Starts Wednesday

All hands on deck! Tom Haudricourt, one of the best in the business broke the story today that Zach Greinke will make his Milwaukee Brewers debut on Wednesday versus the Atlanta Braves.  The Brewers pitching staff has already been throwing smoke, and now we add Greinke?   May will be the Brewers month.  For those wondering, his first Milwaukee start will be the following Monday on the 9th. If I were in Milwaukee, I would be there, noPublish Post questions asked.

Steelers

Steelers
NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers Draft: 4 Round Recap:

Pick #31: first round - Cameron Heyward – DE from Ohio State
This was a need selection for the Steelers, with all of their key defensive linemen other than Ziggy Hook 32 years or older. Insiders rave about his versatility, and love of the game.

Pick #63: second round - Marcus Gilbert - OT from Florida
Versatile, and huge. Questions include his short arms and lack of killer instinct. Remember that Maurkice Pouncey is also from Florida, so one can only assume he highly recommend Gilbert. Marcus is the son of a retired Secret Service agent.

Pick #95: third round - Curtis Brown – CB from Texas
Ranked as the 76th best prospect in the NFL draft by ESPN, this is a rare instance of the Pittsburgh Steelers benefiting from perceived value. Typically the Steelers rate factors such as character and flexibility more than the media scouts. Brown did not miss a single game due to injury during his collegiate career. Expected to be an excellent gunner on punt coverage.

Pick #128: fourth round – Cortez Allen – CB from Citadel
Elite height and impressive bulk. Citadel, as a military school, implies strong work ethic and discipline.

Balmoral

About 600 people gathered at the Queen’s Deeside retreat to celebrate the royal wedding.
Crowds sat in the peaceful grounds of Balmoral watching the ceremony on six large TV screens and toasted the couple and waved union flags as they tied the knot.
People had travelled from throughout the UK to be at the castle for the occasion, which also drew visitors from abroad.
Estate managers hailed the day as “a great success”.
Sisters Anna Bennett, 32, from Edinburgh, and Morven Shaw, 34, from London, wore masks of the royal couple.
“I travelled up because I’m Scottish and I wanted to be up here and with my family,” Mrs Shaw said
Mrs Bennett added: “We thought it would be a nice place to be in Royal Deeside. It’s been lovely and very well organised.”
Amanda Mann, 40, of Springbank Terrace, Aberdeen, was there with her two children Aria, 7, and Sebastien, 4, who were dressed in a wedding dress and suit.
“It will be such a great memory for the children. You feel more part of it being here. It’s a fantastic atmosphere,” she said.
Carol Williams, 45, of Bush Farm, Crathie, said: “She looked really pretty. I think she is prepared for royal life. She knew what she was getting into.”
Elizabeth Surcouf, 32, of Jersey, said: “She looked absolutely beautiful. The dress was stunning, very classic.
“We were in Scotland on holiday and decided there wouldn’t be a better place than this to watch the ceremony.”
Royal warrant-holder Barry Florence, of HM Sheridan Butchers at Ballater, said it was a proud day for him.
“I’m very honoured to be here,” he said. “I couldn’t think of a better place to be. I’d like to wish the royal couple all the best and just hope they spend a lot of time in Deeside.”
French couple Laurent Brassart, 45, and his wife, Marie-Charlotte, 39, were visiting Scotland with their three children for the first time and were impressed by Balmoral.
Mr Brassart said: “Our son, Pierre-Louis, has just had his 10th birthday and he said he wanted to come to Balmoral on the wedding day.
“I’m glad we did. It has been a wonderful experience.”
Garry Marsden, the estate’s visitor enterprise manager, said the decision to screen the wedding for visitors had been a great success. He added: “The weather has been very good and we have had more people than we expected so it’s worked out really well.
“We have had a great start to the visitor season.”

Speedway

Campers began arriving throughout the day Friday, while racecar drivers and their crews, track officials and speedway employees worked as efficiently as a well-oiled machine to prepare for this weekend's 40th Annual CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler.
As Stafford Speedway prepares to let the green flag fly, race fans took advantage of the day's "free admission" to anxiously watch the Whelen All-American Series warm-ups.
Excitement will certainly mount throughout today, as folks soak in the familiar sounds of auto racing, which can be heard throughout town.
"The entire weekend is fun time spent with my family, watching my nephews Kyle and Cory Casagrande doing something the love. This year is especially exciting as Cory starts his season as a rookie in the limited Late Models," said Mandy Fisher, who is camped at the speedway this year for the first time. "The Arutes make this a great weekend, it's mellow and fun, and we're happy to see the sunshine."
The grandstands will open at 10 a.m. Saturday, giving fans a chance to watch warm-ups and heats, followed by the day's feature events (a full schedule of warm-ups and Saturday's feature events for the SK Modifieds, Late Models, SK Light Modifieds, Limited Late Models and Dare Stock can be found ). Gates open at 10 a.m. on Sunday, as well, with the 200-lap Tech-Net Spring Sizzler starting at approximately 3 p.m.

Vertigo

If you don’t recall, Kim Novakwas a top star in the’50s, into the ’60s and (despite lukewarm acting critiques) remains immortalized with Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Vertigo.
Novak abruptly quit acting in 1991 to leave gracefully and pursue other interests.
All that’s a truth of a kind, but her candid reason was that “I got so burned out…I wanted to leave the business, but then if you wait long enough you think, ‘Oh, I miss certain things.’ making of a movie is wonderful.” Then she leveled the lamentation of every pari passu and no-budget filmmaker;  “What’s difficult is afterward when you have to go around and try to sell it.  The actual filming, when you have a good script—which isn’t often—nothing beats it.”
This really isn’t a retrospect of a very popular actress that I thought should have taken more acting lessons, but that Ms. Novak, now 77 is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.  The good news is that doctors (not agents, publicist or managers) say that everything is and will be fine.
And if you care, she’s still creating paintings, sculptures and attending to her horses in Oregon with her husband of 34 years, who happens to be a doctor himself.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins needed a center. They got one in the first round. They needed a running back. They got one in the second round. So what would they do with their first pick on the final day of the NFL Draft?
Well, they needed a speedy wide receiver. And they got one.
Miami devoted a fourth-round selection to pick Abilene Christian Edmond Gates, a player who is expected to provide the final piece to a wide receivers corps that lacked a high-end deep threat last season.
Whether Gates can make a successful transition into the NFL remains to be seen – but there’s no question about his speed. Running a 4.37 at the Scouting Combine, Gates actually said that’s the slowest he’s ever been timed at.
The fastest?
“I ran a 4.21,” he said Saturday. “But that was on a track surface.”
Now, it’s time for the Dolphins to help him become an NFL star. They’ll need to polish up an athlete who was far more focused on basketball until he ended up at Abilene Christian following a hoops stint in junior college.
In 2010, he caught at least 100 yards in seven games, finishing his year with 66 catches for 1,182 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also sees himself as a kick returner, another area of need for the Dolphins.
“I was feeling that the Dolphins were going to take me,” he said. “I just had that feeling that it was going to be the Miami Dolphins. I don’t know why, I just did. Then, I got a call this morning from one of the scouts that told me to be ready.”
The Dolphins lived up to their call – drafting Gates with the 111th overall pick.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos infused some much-needed youth into their defensive backfield. They still have a gaping hole on the defensive line.
The Broncos selected AP All-America safety Quinton Carter of Oklahoma in the fourth round Saturday, one day after grabbing safety Rahim Moore of UCLA in the second round.
Both said they count Broncos safety Brian Dawkins as their hero and look forward to learning from him. But they might ultimately speed the end of Dawkins’ career. One of four thirtysomething starters, Dawkins will be 38 next season and is coming off an injury-riddled 2010.
The Broncos didn’t address their biggest need — defensive tackle — in the first four rounds.
They did take a chance in the fourth round on tight end Julius Thomas of Portland State, a raw player who is hoping to join Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham in making a successful jump from the hardwood to the gridiron. Thomas played just one year of football after completing four seasons of basketball.
Denver, which swapped a pair of picks with Green Bay, own four more selections Saturday.
The Broncos went into their first draft with the new front office trio of football chief John Elway, coach John Fox and general manager Brian Xanders in need of a major makeover on defense, and they took four defensive players with their first five picks, including pass-rusher Von Miller and middle linebacker Nate Irving.
Their biggest hole was at tackle after ranking 31st in the league against the run last season, surrendering a whopping 155 yards a game on the ground. And this draft was especially deep on defensive tackles.
Elway said he wanted to build the foundation of the team through the draft, but after bypassing the top-rated D-tackle in Alabama’s Marcell Dareus with the second overall pick, Fox said the Broncos wouldn’t be pressured into selecting a run-stuffer from the college pool this weekend.
"We will have, at some point, another clump of players to choose from in free agency," he said, adding, "We won’t take a guy we have graded in the fifth round in the second just because he is a defensive tackle."
When the Broncos traded down in the second round, they lost out on the chance to get Clemson’s Jarvis Jenkins but run-stuffers Stephen Paea and Marvin Austin were still available when they were on the clock with Nos. 45 and 46 and instead chose Moore and Miami offensive lineman Orlando Franklin.
The Broncos’ incumbents in their defensive backfield are Dawkins and Renaldo Hill at safety and Champ Bailey and Andre’ Goodman at cornerback. All are 32 years old except for Dawkins, who is 37.
Cornerback Perrish Cox showed immense promise as a rookie last year. But he’s facing a sexual assault case that could land him in jail.
Carter said he was surprised the Broncos selected him after picking Moore a day earlier.
"Honestly, yes, very surprised," he said. "I wasn’t sure if they would pick me or him early on. Obviously, they picked him. Now, they picked me. ... I’m sure we’ll have a great future, a strong backfield and also learn from Brian Dawkins, who is my favorite safety in the game."
That’s just what Moore said.
"Ooh, I can’t wait. I look forward to the time that I’ll be there because I know he’s getting older," Moore said of the 16-year pro. "I wish I was meeting him professionally where he could never age and me and him could play for several years."
He said he was just as eager to learn from Bailey, the Broncos’ perennial Pro Bowl cornerback.
"These guys are my favorite DBs ever. You know, I even have a picture of them on my phone and my laptop," Moore said. "I’m a huge fan. I just can’t wait to get hooked up with them and get to work."
When that happens is anybody’s guess.
The NFL reinstated its lockout Friday night after its first legal victory during the impasse with players over how to divvy up the proceeds of a $9 billion business.
The ruling came after 17 veterans had taken advantage of a short window Friday to show up at work to meet with coaches and pick up playbooks before the league put the "closed" sign back up.
Quarterback Tim Tebow wasn’t among them.
The second-year pro who started the final month last season but will have to beat out Kyle Orton to remain the starter in 2011 told a church audience Friday night that he didn’t get into town in time to join his teammates at Dove Valley and pick up his playbook.
"When I landed, the lockout was back on," Tebow told the crowd.

Chicago Bears

The fallout from the botched trade between the Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears on Thursday has reached the ownership level.
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti expressed disappointment in the Bears -- including their ownership -- after Chicago failed to offer anything more than an apology for the botched trade.
The controversy came when the Bears failed to confirm a trade with the Ravens for the 26th overall pick before time elapsed on the exclusive window for the spot. The Kansas City Chiefs then passed the Ravens in the draft order.
"I'm disappointed in the Bears and the McCaskeys," Bisciotti told the Baltimore Sun of the Bears' owners.
"It is, in my opinion, a deviation from their great legacy. They concluded that their heartfelt and admirable apology was sufficient for our loss. All of us at the Ravens strongly disagree ... probably end of story."
The NFL investigated what happened and, via the Chicago Sun-Times, suggested the Bears comply with the Ravens' request for a fourth-round pick as compensation.
The Ravens ended up taking CB Jimmy Smith at No. 27, and the Bears took OT Gabe Carimi. Both teams said that's who they originally expected to take.
Bears executive George McCaskey told the Sun-Times he was content to let the situation go.
"We spoke to the Ravens about it, and we spoke to the league about it," McCaskey said. "We made a mistake. We apologized for it. The bottom line, as I understand it, the Ravens got the player they were wanting and we got the player we were wanting."
McCaskey demurred when asked if he was willing to agree to the Ravens' compensation request.
"One of the reasons I got out of the legal business is, I was constantly being asked to assess hypotheticals that didn't apply to real life," he told the paper.
"We had a real-life situation in front of us, and we did the best we could under the circumstances. Hopefully, the Ravens understand that."

Oakland Raiders

At one point last season, there was a preference by the Oakland Raiders' coaching staff to keep rookie Jacoby Fordinactive on gameday. To which Raiders owner Al Davis said: "I think you should reconsider that."
Sure enough, Ford went on to make several game-changing and head-turning plays for the Raiders, both as a receiver and a return specialist. Ford was the fastest player at the NFL Scouting Combine in 2010, and it was no surprise that Oakland drafted him (he was a fourth-round pick). Davis loves speed, perhaps more than anyone in the NFL.
And so it should be no surprise that the Raiders now have drafted perhaps the three fastest players from this year'scombine -- Miami cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke in the third round, Ohio State cornerback Chimdi Chekwa in the fourth round and Eastern Washington running back Taiwan Joneslater in the fourth.
"As I told you guys before," Raiders coach Hue Jackson said Saturday to the Oakland media, "we don't run from speed, we run to speed, especially guys that can play."
Davis, who was a football coach long before he was an owner, basically believes there are two things you can't teach: size and speed. He keeps two lists heading into the draft: "Speedy" and "Jumbo." The Raiders also grabbed a player from the Jumbo list in this draft: LSU guard Joseph Barksdale in the third round.
Davis has always had success with his speed mantra, going back to Pro Bowl wide receiver Cliff Branch in the '70s. Davis even recognized the value in the early '60s with a player we originally signed with the Cowboys.
We had Dave Grayson, a defensive back from Oregon, on our squad in 1960. But Tom Landry felt Grayson was too small. On my suggestion, Hank Stram signed him to the Kansas City Chiefs, but Davis traded to make the speedy Grayson a Raider. Grayson went on to register 44 career interceptions and is a member of the all-time AFL team.
