Coachella Doesn't Disappoint

I realize that this is a sports blog, but I like to consider us 85 percent sports with a 15 percent dash of pop culture. Last night, I had one of those moments that I will probably talk about for the next week for anyone who chooses to listen to me. Kanye West had the performance of a lifetime at Coachella.

For those who do not know what Coachella is, it's a music festival that started in 2008 and has grown up very quickly in a short time. It is now in the conversation with Bonaroo, and Lollapalooza. It's the first main event with the next two following in the coming months. First off, YouTube and Five Gum teamed up to broadcast Coachella live for us miserable saps who could not make it out to Cali. This is a beyond genius idea because those who cannot afford it or couldn't get tickets are able to enjoy the experience with the crowd there.

I started the night out with Mumford and Sons encore performance, which was beyond amazing. Those guys are so talented with their instruments, and I think they are one album away from being able to fill up every arena around the nation. Right now, I still think they could headline at Summerfest, which if that happens, you will find me in attendance.

Then as I patiently awaited Kanye's show, I decided to check out The Strokes. They're a band who I have some of their music in my rotation, but forget about it.  That will probably won't happen again after last night. The Strokes TJ Lavin style killed it, and I definitely started downloading more of their library in the coming week.

The other thing is great about this event is the casual music listener is able to find out artists that they like, but haven't had enough time to check them out. Here's to you The National. I found myself enjoying their music as my warm up to Mr. West.  I will also being checking them out in the coming weeks.

I got to watch more because Kanye showed up fashionably late at 1245, instead of 1230. But when he started, I got extremely giddy. I have never seen a live Kanye performance until tonight, and I am prepping myself for his show in Milwaukee on June 30th.  It started with a bunch of dancers looking like they were performing a ballet scene, and then he started out over the people. Kanye's first five songs were Dark Fantasy-Power-Can't Tell Me Nothing-Diamonds Are Forever-Hell Of A Life.  That's three different albums being displayed right at the beginning of the show, and Kanye did this the whole show. Here is a link to set list, and I really have a tough time finding a better set list than this, and I feel this is the final exclamation point for Kanye's comeback.

He gave a great speech in the middle of the performance basically thanking everyone who stuck with him, and didn't believe the bullshit they heard on TV about him. The International Asshole showed some modesty tonight, and put on a great, great show.  People rumored Jay-Z, Katy Perry, Rihanna, and others to appear on stage with him, and Kanye did not have anyone else with him except for Justin Vernon (Eau Claire stand up!).  It became clear to me that Kanye knew he had the stage, and did not want to share it with anyone he competes with because Coachella wanted him and not the other people. The best thing about tonight's epic performance is it gets me more excited to see Mr. West perform at Summerfest in two months. I am sure it will not be at this level, but a guy can dream right?  Kanye just set the bar for every closing act of the summer festivals...

Let me tell you that bar is pretty high.  Keeping doing your thing Ye'.
